Here are frequently asked questions with responses to help guide you through the tryout process and provide a framework for the entire season.
Who should attend JV and Varsity Tryouts?
Junior Varsity and Varsity Tryouts are May 27-29. Returning CHHS players and incoming first year students that feel they can compete at a JV or Varsity level, may also attend. Varsity players can be Freshmen thru Senior. Junior Varsity players can be Freshman thru Junior.
Wear athletic clothing, bring water, wear volleyball or cross training shoes (no converse, vans, etc.). Knee pads or sleeves are recommended, but not mandatory. Do not wear club shirts and avoid “red” clothing, as CHHS colors are blue, green, and white.
All students participating in tryouts must have Athletic clearance. You will need a physical from a doctor (or Gia in the CHHS sports office), along with a medical history from. Both the physical and history form must be uploaded to HomeCampus before any one can participate in tryouts. For more information, see above, contact the Athletic Office or contact the Chino Hills Athletic Director, Ian Trantow.
Typically club volleyball players enter a high school program with significant skills and competitive experience. That said, one does not have to play club volleyball to attend tryouts or potentially make a team. In addition, it does not matter which club a player may (or may not) be affiliated. CHHS volleyball looks at a player's skill, sportsmanship, communication, volleyball IQ, team connectedness, and overall team composition, regardless of club or non-club affiliations.
The tangible qualities we look for are athleticism, experience, ball control, and skills at a specific position. The intangible qualities we look for are depth of character that has a big impact on team chemistry and team performance. Team comes before individual accolades. Much like John Wooden, who coached the legendary UCLA basketball teams, character, humility, pride, hardwork, and team mentality are keys to a successful program. When a player possess both tangible and intangible qualities they are prime candidates for the Chino Hills Girls Volleyball program.
A depth chart is made of all potential players on a team. Typically the top 3-4 players in each position make varsity, and the next grouping make JV. Exceptions to this general determination are if the coaches recognize player potential, team leadership, team chemistry, depth of character, or a multi-positional player that would be an asset to junior varsity or varsity.
Cuts will be made on day 2 and final cuts will be made on day 3. Players will know at the end of day 3 if they are on one of the teams.
Yes! There will be approximately six weeks between these tryouts. Freshmen are encouraged to continue training during this summer in hopes to be selected for the Frosh/Soph team. There will also be a Chino Hills Camp June 3-5, which can provide instruction as well as opportunities to see what CHHS coaches are looking for in their program.
Incoming Freshmen and Sophomores can attend Frosh/Soph tryouts.
Transfer students and all others can attend the Frosh/Soph tryouts. A determination will be made at that time if a particular player is assessed at the frosh/soph, junior varsity or varsity level.
